USB SLAX Flash Drive creation essentials

* A 256MB or larger USB flash drive
* SLAX-6.0.9.tar
* 7-Zip or other .tar extraction tool
* Windows Host to perform the USB install

SLAX USB Flash Drive Creation Process
  1. Download the SLAX for USB .tar file
  2. Using 7-Zip extract the files from the slax-6.0.9.tar to the root of your USB stick
  3. From the boot folder on your "USB device", click *bootinst.bat
  4. Run bootinst.bat to make your USB bootable

  5. Press any key to make your USB device bootable (make sure it is displaying the correct drive)
  6. Once the script has finished, reboot your computer, set your BIOS or Boot Menu to boot from the USB device and save your settings. On next boot, you should have a successful launch of portable SLAX

Tomas has made many improvements to SLAX recently. One improvement is the ability to have SLAX save and restore changes on the fly. In addition, SLAX contains the ability to add new features, software and drivers via modules.

* Notes for VISTA: To make the Flash drive bootable, after moving the files from the zip to your flash drive, you will need to do the following:

  1. Download the newer syslinux-3.72.zip and extract the contents of the zip to your PC
  2. Move the contents of the syslinux-3.7.2/win32 folder to the boot/syslinux folder on your USB device
  3. From your Windows Vista desktop, perform these steps:
    • Click Start, type command in the "start search box"
    • Right click on command prompt from the list
    • Select Run as administrator
    • Type X: and press enter (replacing X with your flash drive letter)
    • Type cd boot and press enter
    • Type bootinst.bat and follow the onscreen instructions to make your drive bootable.
